American Patients Don’t Have to Worry About PIP Silicone Gel Breast Implants

December 23rd, 2011

Yesterday, 12/22/11, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published a press release that patients who received breast implants here in America do not have to worry about the defective PIP silica gel implants that were manufactured in France. They were not approved for use in the United States. More about this is in the ASPS press release.

“Permanent” Facial Fillers: Long Lasting Results

December 19th, 2011

Use of a patient’s own fat as a graft can produce long lasting results for facial fillers. However, the results are technique-dependent. Here’s our approach:

  • Gentle, water assisted fat collection (Body Jet liposuction)
  • Preparation of fat with an advance filter system
  • Board certified plastic surgeons & an accredited office operating room facility

This new version of fat grafting has promising results compared to older techniques and does not require repeated injections. A plus for patients!

For more information, please see our website page Promises and Pitfalls: Fat Grafting – A “Permanent” Filler or Contact Us for a consultation. Ask why we don’t post our patients “before and after” pictures online, too!

Please Make a Donation to USO to Help Our US Troops and Their Families

December 7th, 2011

Today, and recently, our thoughts continue to turn toward the armed service members. Today is the 70th anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor. This day comes a few weeks after Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving Day and just weeks before the holidays come, too.

North Dallas Plastic Surgery is very proud of our own Doctor Harlan Pollock who served during the Vietnam War. An article was published about the plastic surgery services then Major Pollock provided over 30 years ago during that war: you can read it on our website. Dr. Pollock was in the Vietnam War from 1967-1971 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, with a Bronze Star.

We encourage you to remember our armed service members who are away from their families during the holidays. As the end of the year approaches, many people are considering to which charities they will donate. We hope that you will join us: make a donation to the USO (the United Service Organizations, Inc.) as they continue to support the troops and their families.

Benefit of Our “No-Drain Abdominoplasty” is Evident from Patients with Drains

November 29th, 2011

We found the following messages on a cosmetic surgery expert information site where two patients talked about their experiences with drains that were inserted after each had a tummy tuck from other plastic surgeons. This dramatically illustrates why our progressive tension suture – also known as the No Drain Abdominoplasty – has been so well accepted by our patients and by other plastic surgeons, too. Our experience and data show drains are unnecessary after the tummy tuck procedure, eliminating the problems that these two patients publicly discussed online.

The first tummy tuck patient posted this message a few days before Thanksgiving:

drain in 13 days post op!
So annoying – I am still draining about 70 cc’s per day. With the holiday approaching the earliest I would be able to get it out would be next Monday (almost 3 weeks post op).
My plastic surgeon wants it under 30 cc’s per day for 2 days.
Is this normal??? It seems way longer compared to others ??

Here is the reply from another patient (who also had drains for a long time):

The longer the better in my opinion! My drains were taken out 10 days post op and I was at about 25 cc’s. I ended up developing 2 seromas. One is gone and the other we’re working on. I wish I would have kept my drains longer. I know they suck but in the long run it pays off! Hugs Sweetie….

What May Go Wrong if Cosmetic Surgery is Cheaper & Faster

September 20th, 2011

Last week the USA Today ran an exposé of high volume cosmetic surgery clinics which generate business through slick, enticing, but often misleading advertising (see their article here: Cosmetic surgery gets cheaper, faster, scarier). As the article develops, the pattern is evident how a high incidence of unrecognized, poorly treated and often serious complications occurred after the procedures were done by unqualified surgeons and non-accredited facilities.

The American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF) accredits the largest number of U.S. office-based surgical facilities (OBS). The AAAASF requires 100% compliance of rigorous safety standards including requiring the appropriate credentials and hospital privileges for the specific procedure to be done in the office.

Cosmetic surgery carried out in an AAAASF-accredited facility by a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is an assurance of safety… but this is in sharp contrast to a treatment that’s the cheapest or fastest.

Plastic Surgery for Senior Citizens? Yes.

August 15th, 2011

A recent article in the New York Times discusses the increased frequency of cosmetic surgery in people in their “golden years”. We find this trend to be accurate and agree that cosmetic surgery, especially facelifts, can be done safely in a healthy senior.

In order to improve the safety of patients of any age having facial surgery, we do this surgery under local anesthesia, with twilight sleep provided by an anesthesia professional. Regardless of our age, if healthy we all care about how we look!

When Researching Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Examine the Doctor’s Website

July 29th, 2011

We just added a new website page to our list of Cosmetic Surgery: Promises and Pitfalls – Patients Researching Cosmetic Surgery: Examine the doctor’s website.

When we want a specific cosmetic procedure our instinct is to begin with a search engine to get a list of web pages. Or, we’ll use a social networking website to ask friends: they’ll give us a list of doctors to consider.

Once we see a plastic surgeon’s website, then what? That’s when the confusion sets in. Here are ways to evaluate the doctor’s website so you can decide who’s the right choice for you.
