Mommy Makeover – Is it the Right Choice for Dallas Women?

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

"Mommy Makeover" is the Right Surgery for the Right Dallas Women

The “Mommy Makeover” refers to a combination of surgical procedures that can alter the changes to in a woman’s body resulting from pregnancy and nursing. “Mommy Makeover” began as a marketing term and has become firmly established in the media and popular language.

While North Dallas Plastic Surgery did not originate the term “Mommy Makeover”, we agree with the concept that undesirable changes as a result of pregnancy are inevitable and can be distressing. Patients should consider many factors in the decision about surgery, but in reality surgery is usually the only means of reversing these changes. If you are considering a “Mommy Makeover”, check our our website for more information: http://www.drpollock.com/dallas-mommy-makeovers.htm

Our Dallas and Allen plastic surgeons Dr. Harlan Pollock and Dr. Todd A. Pollock were quoted in the New York Times for their thoughts on the Mommy Makeover procedure, too!

Get a Second Opinion Before You Commit to Any Plastic Surgery Treatment!

Monday, February 4th, 2013

With all the choices of cosmetic medical and surgical treatments, it is important to make the right decision when considering cosmetic procedures. Unfortunately expensive and enticing marketing of cosmetic procedures is often more effective than the particular procedure. Non surgical and minimally invasive surgical procedures are advertised as being cheaper, easier, and better than more extensive surgical procedures.

How can one make a decision? A second opinion from a Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be considered before spending the money and assuming the risk an advertised alternative treatment or procedure. The goal of our Dallas and Allen, TX, plastic surgeons is to inform their patients on the realistic expectations from cosmetic surgeries. In fact, we have an entire portion of our website devoted to this: we call it Plastic Surgery: Promises and Pitfalls.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

Some Information about Gummy Bear Breast ImplantsInformation from our North Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. Todd A. Pollock:

In my plastic surgery practice, many women who come in for a breast augmentation consultation ask about “gummy bear” breast implants. These implants are being hyped as the next great thing. Of those who ask, very few know what they are or what advantages they may have over other types of breast implants.

From the very beginning of breast implant surgery there has been a question of what is the best shape for a breast implant. As tear-drop shape was thought to be best so the first implants were tear-drop. However, the thin, liquid silicone was unable to maintain the shape and tended to fold. Additionally, these implants have a definite orientation and if they move by flipping or rotating the breast looks abnormal. These problems led to the development of round implant which have been the most commonly used implants over the decades. But advocates of the shaped implants continued to pursue this implant type. The manufacturers, in pursuit of a shaped implant began to crosslink the silicone molecules together to thicken the silicone into a more cohesive gel. There have been several generations of this “cohesive” gel with each subsequent generation getting thicker and thicker until the current 3rd generation that is able to hold a tear-drop shape. This is known as “form stable” but nicknamed “gummy bear” after the gooey candy.

There are advantages and disadvantages of these gummy bear breast implants. The biggest advantage is that it is tough to break and may last a long time, if not forever. However, with the form stabilization, it is much firmer and, in my opinion, loses much of the advantage of the soft, natural feeling, (2nd generation cohesive) silicone implant. Also, shaped implants can rotate out of position and this occurs in 5% or more patients. And there is still the question of whether a shaped implant is necessary. Round implants are thought to impart shape on the breast because gravity makes them more like a normal breast- when upright, the implant moves to the bottom of the breast giving the breast a tear-drop shape. When lying down, the implant is round, like a normal breast is in that position.

So, are gummy bear implants for you?

That is a question that you and your board certified plastic surgeon must answer together. But remember, just because it is new and “all the rage” doesn’t mean it is without problems and trade-offs. Our plastic surgeons, located in both Dallas and Allen, believe and practice this philosophy when it comes to our patients: Beauty begins with knowledge.

Considering a “Mini-Style Facelift”? Let the Buyer Beware.

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Our Dallas and Allen plastic surgeons warn consumers to be mindful of the  for “mini-style facelifts” that are widely marketed as revolutionary. The truth is what is revolutionary is the marketing package itself.

When investigating such procedures we suggest you keep these issues in mind:

  • Watch for “bait and switch” – the basic mini style lift is only the beginning procedure and cost!
  • Are the pictures representative of the basic procedure or are there add-ons?
  • Are the before and after poses comparable?
  • Who determines what is recommended: is it the surgeon or her/his salesperson?

Our website has other feedback about both mini-face lifts and facelifts for patients in the North Texas areas like Dallas, McKinney, Plano, and Allen areas. These are written by our cosmetic surgeons Dr. Harlan Pollock and Dr. Todd Pollock to inform the public about plastic surgery:

Bargain Cosmetic Surgery May Become Very Expensive in the End

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

There is a disturbing video recently posted by NBC News (Backward butt implant video shows dangers of cheap plastic surgery) that shows a woman able to spin the buttock implant around and around after her surgery.

We all like to save money but doing so with plastic surgery can be dangerous – even deadly. The same NBC article points out how a 20 year-old patient died after her surgery wasn’t done at an accredited surgical facility. A bad cosmetic surgery may lead to more expenses from additional surgery (or surgeries) being needed to correct the first, cheap one. Yes, saving money in a bank is great but consumers in Dallas and throughout the US should beware of what can go wrong.

If you are considering any type of plastic surgery in the North TX area, from a mini to a full procedure, then please contact North Dallas Plastic Surgery – call 214.363.2575 – and schedule a consultation with Dr. Harlan Pollock or Dr. Todd A. Pollock. You’ll want to hear their experienced opinion on your cosmetic surgery options.

Beware of Plastic Surgery Wannabes

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

A recent article in a Florida newspaper demonstrates the national problem of “plastic surgery wannabes” - those who are partially or are basically untrained in cosmetic surgery. The ‘wannabes’ operate in unaccredited office facilities. This certainly does not describe surgeons credentialed by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and does not describe those cosmetic surgery professionals who have privileges to do the procedures in a hospital.

To avoid this issue, patients considering cosmetic surgery should do their homework: check into the credentials and hospital privileges of the surgeon and the accreditation of the facility! Yes, once again the buyer must beware.

At North Dallas Plastic Surgery, Drs. Harlan and Todd Pollock are each board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are members in good standing in the American Society of Plastic Surgery. For more information on our thoughts on the importance of credentials, please see our website article Credentials: The Importance of Medical Credentials, which is a part of our ongoing series Cosmetic Surgery: Promises and Pitfalls™.

Why Duck Bill Lips?

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Woman with protruding lips - resembling a duck's bill.

As a plastic surgeon, when I view strangers rarely does it occur to me about any cosmetic procedure that would improve their appearance. It would be unkind and unreasonable to believe everyone should meet an arbitrary standard of beauty. However, bad surgery – and bad injections – do bother me.

A current cosmetic alteration, while subtle, seems obvious to me and makes me wonder why women seek and apparently like the “duck lip look”…. These are injections and/or implants that cause the lip line to project out so one’s lips resemble a duck’s bill or beak which results in a look which I think isn’t normal, nor attractive.

However, augmenting lips while retaining a normal natural appearance is both doable and a goal we seek.

Drs. Harlan and Todd Pollock Were Featured on Local Dallas News About PTS for Tummy Tuck

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Dallas Tummy Tuck With No Drains Makes it Easier for Patients to Stand Up After Surgery

Our two doctors, Dr. Harlan Pollock and Dr. Todd A. Pollock, were featured on the news last Thursday. The story starts with a Dallas-area patient who looked for the best doctor and method to help her with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). She learned about the no-drain tummy tuck pioneered by our doctors using the PTS (progressive tension sutures) which allows for the patient to have an upright, not hunched-over, position after surgery.

In case you missed it, you can still see the video online with our doctors explaining the PTS no-drain tummy tuck procedure and the benefits to the hundreds of patients who have had the surgery done.
