Body Jet (water assisted liposuction—WAL)

We are now offering a new liposuction technology that provides us with an additional method for body contouring. Body Jet or water assisted liposuction has been developed, researched and widely used in Europe for ten years. It has received FDA approval in Spring 2009.

This technique is more gentle than conventional liposuction and when appropriate can even be done with local anesthesia only. It is simple in concept, a low pressure jet of water (containing local anesthetic) is sprayed into the tissues, which simultaneously dislodges and suctions the fat cells. By loosening or freeing the fat cells from the surrounding tissue, less physical action and less suction is required to remove the fat. Therefore, WAL is a more gentle, less traumatic procedure, with less post-operative bruising and swelling. Further, better skin retraction or shrinkage is seen with WAL, which further improves body-contouring results.

An additional advantage of WAL is the protection and preservation of the fat which is removed. Recent studies have shown that as much as 90% of the fat cells are living and can be used for fat grafting. If these studies are accurate, the success rate of fat grafting should be improved markedly. Reports from Germany have demonstrated up to 70% fat graft take. While we have no personal experience using WAL harvested fat, we are impressed with these reports and will evaluate this use.
