Dallas Breast Augmentation: Silicone Breast Implants

Though generally a very safe procedure with a high level of patient satisfaction, a woman considering breast augmentation should carefully consider the various options and potential risks of the procedure that may have lifelong implications.

The concept of placement of an implant to enlarge the breast may seem simple, but there are many differences in opinion as to which of the following variables will produce the best result (most attractive, least potential for complication, etc.). One should understand that there is no standard breast augmentation operation. Each surgeon has their own opinion and patients should leave most of the decisions the surgeon. Second opinions are often helpful. One should select the surgeon they trust and feel most comfortable with and allow them to use their judgment and experience to guide you.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants
Silicone Gel Implants:  the  new Memory Gel implants

  • The major advantage of silicone gel implants is the soft and natural feel of the augmented breast.
  • This type of implant is the original implant described over 40 years ago. They were used extensively until 1991 when use was restricted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to concerns for a link between silicone and certain illnesses.
  • On November 17, 2006, after 15 years of scrutiny of this product, the FDA approved the use of silicone gel implants.  The use of these implants is with certain restrictions that the FDA requires.  General information is available on line at www.mentorcorp.com.  However, the best way to obtain specific information is in consultation with a surgeon certified to use these implant.  In our practice we have over 35 years experience with silicone gel implants and have met the requirements for certification (required by the recent FDA ruling).

OUR APPROACH:

Type of implant: With the recent release of silicone gel implants for primary breast augmentation, there is a choice of type of implant (gel or saline). We individualize the entire procedure to the specific patient and the choice of implant is made (by patient) only after a thorough discussion with one of our surgeons. The discussion includes factual information about implants, FDA information and the surgeon’s experience with each implant.
