Todd Pollock, M.D., FACS

Plastic Surgeon in Dallas and Allen, Texas

Comments from Dr. Todd Pollock:

The practice of Plastic Surgery is extremely gratifying and I am pleased when I am able to make a difference in patients' lives through surgery. Whether it is correcting a deformity, enhancing one's natural features, or repairing a defect from injury or cancer surgery, I am always honored when patients trust me with their care.

Education Training

I graduated from University of Texas and also attended Southern Methodist University in preparation for my medical education and career. After four years at Chicago Medical School, I was accepted to the University of Texas Southwestern program at Parkland Memorial Hospital where I completed my residency in General Surgery. My training and experience at Parkland provided me with a meaningful background in the principles and judgment of general surgery, which I utilize every day in my Plastic Surgery practice. My Plastic Surgery residency was completed at the University of Chicago where not only was knowledge of my specialty taught, but it also stimulated my innovation, emphasized compassion, and stressed the importance of ethics.

Practicing Plastic Surgery

Upon returning to Dallas, I joined my father in practice in North Dallas at the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. When Presbyterian Hospital of Allen opened, I established a satellite office there, which has allowed me to spend half of my time practicing at a new facility in a young community.

I have come to understand that "practicing medicine" means learning every day and working to make contributions to improve your area of specialty. My father, Dr. Harlan Pollock, and I have originated and published a technique that we believe improves the quality of abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), while making it safer and easier for our patients (see Promises and Pitfalls: Progressive Tension Sutures [PTS]). We have presented this innovative procedure at numerous state and national Plastic Surgery meetings, and in 2007 we began teaching a course about the use of PTS at both of the national Plastic Surgery meetings. It has been particularly gratifying to participate with my father on this project.

In addition, I have served as an instructor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, working with Plastic Surgery residents. I have also served as the President of the Dallas Society of Plastic Surgeons and as Chief of Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Allen. I am currently President of the Medical Staff there.

Cosmetic Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery has been an important part of my career. However, in recent years I have seen an increased demand for cosmetic surgery, which has become the major part of my practice. I enjoy cosmetic surgery because daily I see its positive impact on my patients. It deals with quality of life -- essentially improving the way an individual feels about him/herself.

What happens in the operating room is obviously very important, but I believe the consultation is the key to a successful cosmetic surgery practice. While many surgeons delegate the major part of the consultation to an assistant, I personally spend at least a half an hour with all my new patients. This allows me to provide thorough evaluations, thoughtful recommendations, and information sufficient to permit the patient to make an informed decision regarding surgery.

I am indebted to my mentors at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and the University of Chicago. These dedicated academic surgeons have been not just a source of knowledge and surgical judgment, but professional inspiration.

I enjoy what I do and I believe it shows in my surgical results, patient and professional relationships.
