Male Breast Reduction in Dallas and Allen, TX

Gynecomastia Surgery

Enlargement of the male breast (gynecomastia) occurs when there is excess breast tissue and/or fat in the chest. While gynecomastia is a relatively common occurrence during puberty and later in life, it often causes men to feel embarrassed and self-conscious about their appearance.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Often, gynecomastia (male breasts, “man boobs”) is caused by an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen in males. This hormonal imbalance can occur due to a number of reasons, including natural changes to the body (puberty), drug use, and steroid use.

Although cancer can occur in the male breast (causing the presence of breasts in men), symmetrical, soft enlargement of the male breast is a benign and self-limited process. While most adolescent breast enlargement dissipates on its own, this is not always the case, especially for men in their 20s and older who suffer from gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia can be psychologically devastating, since men desire a masculine chest appearance; however, various plastic surgery methods, including liposuction and surgical excision, can be used to eliminate gynecomastia and help men achieve the more masculine appearance they have always wanted.

You may be a candidate for male breast reduction surgery (gynecomastia correction surgery) if you are unhappy with the size and appearance of your male breasts. Male breast reduction candidates:

  • Do not smoke
  • Are at or near their ideal weight
  • Have realistic expectations for their results
  • Are in generally good health

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Todd A. Pollock to determine if you are a candidate for gynecomastia surgery.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Gynecomastia surgery is performed using liposuction, surgical excision, or a combination of the two. The appropriate technique for you will depend on the cause of your gynecomastia (excess fat in the chest, excess breast tissue, or both). At your consultation, Dr. Pollock will evaluate your condition to create a surgical plan that is right for you.

If your gynecomastia is due to the presence of excess fat (pseudogynecomastia), then liposuction alone may be used to remove the unwanted fat cells. With this procedure, small incisions are made indiscreetly on the breast, through which a thin tube (cannula) will be inserted. The cannula will be used to loosen fat cells in the area. Once loosened, these fat cells will be suctioned out of the body.

However, if your enlarged breast is due to excess glandular tissue or skin, excision is necessary. Incisions will be made along the breast crease, through which excess tissue is surgically removed, and skin is trimmed (if necessary). The incisions are then closed.

Many gynecomastia patients require a combination of liposuction and tissue excision to help them achieve their optimal cosmetic goals.

How Long Will My Gynecomastia Recovery Be?

The recovery period for gynecomastia surgery varies with each patient and is dependent on the extent of the procedure.

After your male breast reduction surgery, it is important that you spend a significant amount of time resting. This means that you should avoid strenuous activity, including exercise and lifting anything heavy, for at least four to six weeks following your procedure. Most men can return to work and other daily activities within a week.

During your recovery, you will likely experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Medication can be taken to alleviate any pain you may experience during the days following your procedure; however, if pain persists or increases, it is important that you notify Dr. Pollock.

Are My Male Breast Reduction Surgery Results Permanent?

After your gynecomastia correction surgery, you can look forward to a more contoured and masculine appearance to your chest. Not only will you look better, but you can feel more confident and comfortable with your appearance.

Results from male breast reduction surgery are intended to be long lasting since breast tissue does not grow back. However, extreme weight fluctuation can negatively affect your results. You can prolong your stunning results by maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
