Women who want to feel more confident in clothing and bathing suits may opt for tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) to flatten and sculpt the midsection. The procedure offers dramatic, long-lasting results, but does it also leave lasting scarring? This blog explains tummy tuck scars, from how long the incisions take to heal to steps you can take to minimize their appearance.
Where Are Tummy Tuck Scars Located?
The location of your tummy tuck scars depends on the abdominoplasty technique used. A full tummy tuck places a horizontal incision spanning from hipbone to hipbone across the lower abdomen. A modified tummy tuck uses a shorter incision, also located on the lower abdomen.
The modified tummy tuck only targets the lower abdomen and provides minimal correction. A full tummy tuck, which Dr. Pollock performs for most patients, allows for greater correction that enhances the upper and lower abdominal areas. Some patients may also require an incision encircling the navel to adjust the size and position of the belly button for natural results.
Tummy Tuck Scar Healing Stages
Your tummy tuck incision needs time to heal fully. Healing can be broken down into three basic stages:
Stage 1: The Inflammatory Phase
Immediately after your surgery, your incision enters the inflammatory stage, which lasts one to four days. The incision will be red, swollen, and tender. You will have a dressing over it and a compression garment to manage swelling and reduce tension on the incision site.
You will be instructed to keep the incision clean to prevent infection. Your body will do the rest of the healing work, as blood vessels constrict and platelets clot to stop bleeding to the area. White blood cells move in to remove bacteria and keep the area free of infection.
Stage 2: The Proliferative Phase
This stage takes you through the rest of the first month of your abdominoplasty recovery. Your scar may still be raised, but should look less puffy and may change to a dark red or purple hue. The additional color is due to increased blood flow in the area, which assists the healing process.
During this stage, your body produces new collagen, which forms a foundation of healthy tissue around the wound. Continue wearing your compression garment to reduce tension on the surgical area. Once the incision is completely closed, you can begin applying topical silicone gel or sheets to help flatten and fade your scars.
Stage 3: The Maturation Phase
As collagen production increases, the blood supply declines, and your scar begins to lighten and flatten. The incision shifts from dark red or purple to light brown or pink, as it slowly blends into your natural skin color. It can take up to 18 months before you see the final result of your scar.
You may continue using silicone products throughout the maturation phase, though many patients switch to a hydrating lotion to keep the skin around the scar soft and supple. You should also use sunscreen whenever you are outside. UV rays can affect healing, leading to a permanently darker tummy tuck scar.
Tips to Minimize Your Tummy Tuck Scars
Throughout your tummy tuck recovery, you can take steps to minimize your scar’s appearance:
- Follow all postoperative instructions carefully.
- Wear your compression garment as directed.
- Use silicone gels and strips.
- Practice gentle massage to break down scar tissue.
- Protect your scar from UV rays.
Your choice of plastic surgeon will also impact the appearance of your scars after surgery. Dr. Todd Pollock developed a proprietary suturing technique, the progressive tension suture (PTS) approach. This technique anchors the redraped skin to the underlying tissues at the end of your abdominoplasty, eliminating tension and space under the skin flap for a smoother result. PTS also eliminates the need for drains, further improving scarring after surgery.
