Why People Seeking Plastic Surgery Shouldn’t Jump on a New Trend or Hunt for a Bargain

Board certified plastic surgeons are seeing an increase of patients coming in who are dissatisfied from previous procedures they’ve had. Other patients arrive with complications from surgeries done by unqualified practitioners. This is reflected in a news release from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) website about a FL family physician allowing unqualified staff to perform liposuction – ASAPS Applauds Florida Board of Medicine’s Actions to Protect Patient Safety.

The cause of this is actually related to a couple of different factors: aggressive advertising and media exposure for “new” procedures and an economic recession that encourages patients to shop price and seek non-surgical or minimally invasive procedures. Also, some practitioners are performing procedures beyond the scope of their training and usually in non-accredited facilities.

Our suggestion is that potential cosmetic surgery patients need to be better informed about the significance of board certification and surgical facility accreditation.
